As with most Couture shows in Paris, we’re used to seeing a flow of models sashaying down the runway with the fashion set eagerly awaiting the standout gown that closes the show. Six hours to the East however, you’ll find that not only are India’s glitterati set awaiting the showstopper at Couture Fashion Week…but more importantly WHO is the lucky Bollywood actress to have been chosen to close the show.
It seems to have somewhat become part of the culture in India at Fashion Week. Designers will quietly pick their favourite actress to showcase an exquisite piece of couture work, be it a hand embroidered Sari glimmering in crystals or a flamboyant Bridal Lengha (traditional Indian bridal wear) with layers of Silk and Tulle and lashings of golden Zardosi thread work…resulting in the fashion-set ‘oohing’ and ‘aahing’ and it ultimately being one hell of a glamorous affair.
It seems the idea of a Bollywood actress (not to mention HUGE Style icon across India) walking the finale seems to have rubbed off on Australian designers Tamara Ralph and Michael Russo – The pair had Indian actress Sonam Kapoor, close their AW’17 Couture show in Paris in what appears to be one of the most magical looking Bridal gowns complete with glimmering head-gear (in India this is typically normal of a bride and is referred to as a Shingar Patti).
The stunning Ralph & Russo fitted Gown appears White but is actually a Champagne-hue and is Chantilly Lace, embellished with Pearlescent micro-beads, Swarovski crystals and hand embroidered with Silver and Gold bullion and Silk thread work. The Bridal Gown features a dramatic double duchess overskirt giving it a Princess-like train.
Ralph & Russo are one of my favourites when it comes to Couture and the collection did not disappoint. Some of my favourites below…
I can’t wait to see Elie Saab!
